The Brickwork of Sapphire
Automatism and automatic drawing - a path through the unconscious.

The Brickwork of Sapphire is not a finite series of artworks. It is a methodology. It also is the origin of the "Nesting the Shadow Drawing Mechanism", the development of the Automatic drawing process that was begun in Seattle in 1993.

No preexisting intentions are entertained during the Automatic drawing process. These works are initiated with the more passive of the two hands in order to override the compulsory tracts of habit and default ways of thinking. In this way the work is begun with 'no mind' which is pursued into it's own places.

This activity creates a trance state in which the lines seem to be strings floating in three dimensional space.

When forms begin to emerge the method shifts to one of rendering and actively engaging the hints of object and subject that have arisen in the drawing. This 'Gestalt' stage of the drawing is executed with the dominant-hand. This practice is utterly preoccupied with fleshing out the shapes that are emerging from the tangles of line... building surfaces and opacity; differentiating bodies from atmospheric spaces; and creating connective tissues.
